Help Your Child Prepare for Their 11 Plus Exams
The 11 Plus exams are taken by some Year 6 pupils in primary schools throughout England. Although it isn’t a mandatory exam, it’s a way of choosing those most academically suited to attend grammar school or selective school. What is the Eleven Plus Exam?
The 11+ exam covers English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning (VR), and Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR). Most grammar schools and some selective schools require this as an entry test to show the student is capable of excelling in their institution.
The exam isn’t obligatory, and Year 6 children will not need to sit this exam to gain entry to a comprehensive secondary school. However, if you would like your child to attend a grammar school, this exam is required.
The 11 Plus exam usually takes place at the beginning of the school year, giving children plenty of time to prepare through the summer. The results are usually published in October, allowing you time to apply for the appropriate secondary school of your choice.
Prepare for 11 Plus Exams
We advise beginning preparation for the 11 Plus exams a year in advance. This gives them plenty of time to grasp the materials and feel confident in sitting it.
If you’re unsure whether it’s the right choice to put your child forward for the Eleven Plus exam, it’s best to assess their current abilities and see how well they score. We can provide an initial assessment of your child’s abilities and discuss a learning plan with you.
